Chapter Six - Carrie

It was a roller coaster. No sooner than Max announcing the competition did everyone go mad. They were off and running like horses who had been firmly spurred. The looks of stony concentration were somewhat new for all of them.

The only exception to this new grim reality was Thomas, who seemed to be treating the whole to do as just another day at the office.

It wasn’t really surprising. He had been at it for years and probably wasn’t surprised by much anymore. I didn’t know for sure if he would be one of the winners but was quietly pulling for him without actually going so far as to try and influence Max his way.

I was determined that the contest be as fair as possible, which should actually be pretty easy. While there was certainly an element of human frailty. Most of the decision was going to be made based on sales figures, facts that were at least quantifiable without being immutable.

There was a degree of politicking of course. Tricks varying from shady to dirty were being pulled in all directions. It was interesting how people could change when competing for something they all wanted.

Again, Thomas was the exception. He would see what was going on, nothing much getting past him, but never participated.

He usually just shook his head in sadness at the younger generation. It brought to mind the idea that the best person to choose for a leadership position was the person who didn’t overtly want it. They were more likely to see it as a duty rather than a right. I couldn’t help to think that the same applied to rewards.

As if to answer in the affirmative, Lauren was even more of a bitch than usual. Not only did she spread rumors, but she also resorted to mind games and sabotage to try to get the upper hand. Thomas was the only one not rising to her provocations. If anything, he seemed to find the whole thing funny, at least in an absurdist sense.

The morning had come. The dust had settled, the tears had dried, and winners had been chosen. I was made aware of the results by an early morning text from Max. Even though I wasn’t in the competition, I was already going on the trip without having to suffer through all the fire and rain.

I had caught up on my agent work and, according to Max, the announcement wouldn’t be until later, so I could take my time getting in. That was actually how he put it, strongly implying that he knew full well about my tardiness, whether Lauren had told him or not. What was more, he didn’t seem to care.

He had never mentioned it before and while it was difficult to convey nuance through text, he seemed to think this was a good thing. He essentially gave me permission to sleep in. It was more care than I ever dared hope he might have for me.

It could have been concerned for me as a co-worker, sure.
